I love this cardigan. Though soft-bodied hybrids somewhere between a sports coat and a sweater have been around for a little while, this is the first one that’s really caught my attention, even if it is going to cost a pretty little penny ($1000). I’m most interested in the brilliant bold pattern. I think I’m going to start wearing a lot more of these obnoxiously patterned clothes seeing a resurgence that is, in my mind, driven by the bold aesthetic of Tom Ford.

Some great use of denim. Different denim garments can be a real cool look as long as they’re used carefully. You know cheap denim products? They look like garbage for the most part. I don’t think that anything makes me cringe more than a pair of $20 jeans. It has to do with cost only in that the expense in a higher priced pair of jeans goes into a better wash and, more importantly, better methods of construction that give the denim a rich look and feel.
This is one example of some denim being liberally applied, but there are far better ones available. If I come across any I’ll point them out. It looks like denim is trending right now, particularly chambray shirts. So hold on tight and get rugged.

robert geller for levis - wearing head to toe denim can work if the washes don’t exactly match. what a rugged, relaxed look!

Into the Wild: The Bearded Man

Post-economic meltdown, man has graduated from the constant, carefully groomed 5 O’Clock shadow and found himself face-to-face with the full beard. The prevalence of facial growth on men during these harder times is undeniable, but why? I’ve suggested that being unemployed, many men are no longer required to shave, but there’s more to it than that. The ability to grow a beard is unique to men (and some female circus sideshows, but I digress), a birthright and not something to hide behind, but rather to display masculinity in the most noticeable of places. In our culture we have a tendency to grow beards during times of trial. The playoff beard, the exam beard, the unemployment beard, and this is a time of trial for society. Peak Oil, high unemployment, climate change? These are the problems of the city. So North American men are becoming more primal, turning away from the city to look into themselves and, literally or figuratively, go out into the wild.

Where Do We Go From Here? Style in 2010 and Beyond

At the end of the year it’s common for everyone to question how the year past has gone by and how the year ahead is going to unfold. ‘Am I happy?’ the question will arise, hang in the air for a while, and with this last tough year in the economy I think we are answering that query through new ways that often are expressed in both how we choose appear to the world and how we perceive the world.

We’re going through a bit of a cultural shift, still stinging from the blows that the last decade has delivered us. Time called this past decade the ”Worst Decade Ever” but I’m not going to go that far. Sure, there have been tough times, but joyful times too.

While some may point to the middle of this past decade as a time of prosperity, we’ve all been shown that that was just waiting to slap us in the face. It’s our fault we didn’t know what to do with the opportunity except spend more money than we had, even though we had more money than ever before.

So then, where are we going? Well it looks like everyone is finding more pleasure in the simpler things in life, and this is being expressed through our style and fashion…
