I love this cardigan. Though soft-bodied hybrids somewhere between a sports coat and a sweater have been around for a little while, this is the first one that’s really caught my attention, even if it is going to cost a pretty little penny ($1000). I’m most interested in the brilliant bold pattern. I think I’m going to start wearing a lot more of these obnoxiously patterned clothes seeing a resurgence that is, in my mind, driven by the bold aesthetic of Tom Ford.

What a spectacular combination of patterns. I have real admiration for a man that can pull off a loud jacket like this. Generally it would be inadvisable; it’s a tough task. There’s no real secret here, just try and keep the patterns at a different “scale” and it won’t look too busy. If you have any questions about patterns, just send me an e-mail at mrsartorial@mrsartorial.com

What a spectacular use of colour and pattern. This is another look that you simply can’t replicate by “following rules”. What really holds this look together is the use of blue. Notice the jacket, the sweater, the shirt, and even his eyes have a bluish hue to them. This is complemented by the pink (one of my favourite colours to match with blue), putting most of the focus on the bow-tie. I love it.

This is how patterns should be worn in the summer, absolutely brilliant. Unfortunately most men have not mastered this level of expertise in dressing themselves, but here are a few of my observations: note that nothing here “matches” which is a common rookie mistake for men trying to dress better in a suit or jacket. Rather, each of the elements coordinates with the others through pattern or colour. The patterns all have a geometric and squared off foundation which they play around, and all colours are in a complementary palette, except for the black gingham tie, which is muted enough to let it’s pattern subtly reference the other geometrics in the outfit. I love it. If anyone else has any examples of colour and pattern mastery like this, post a link in the comments for everyone to see.

I’ve found exactly what I want to wear today! Too bad this clothing is in Russia…and…isn’t mine.
damn.

Hugh Jackman, another celebrity with serious panache. I love the patterns going on here, polka dots and plaid. Reminds me of Tom Ford. I find it interesting that all of the actors with the best style are also prominent in musical theatre and live theatre. Hm…
